Akpeyi Heaps Blame On Ref Over Argentina Howler
Daniel Akpeyi has heaped blames on the assistant referee for his howler in Nigeria’s 4-2 win over Argentina in a friendly on Tuesday.
The Chippa United goalie dropped the ball and later picked it outside the box without touching an opponent.
As a result, a freekick was awarded to the South Americans which Ever Banega converted.
The Olympic bronze medalist said he saw the assistant referee raise his flag and dropped the ball and did not know that the referee had not blown the whistle.
“When Akpeyi saw the linesman with the flag, his mind did not tell him that the referee did not blow the whistle,’’ a source close to Daniel Akpeyi told allnigeriasoccer.com.
“He just dropped the ball to play the offside. It really broke his heart that they scored from the freekick, and people will forget about the saves he made during the game.”
